Since 2001, Gent Jazz has been a place where adventurous listeners, curious outsiders and devoted music lovers gather around music that fully unfolds in a live setting. A festival that has never confined itself to a single genre, but consistently embraces artists with a distinct voice, a singular world and an unmistakable urge to push boundaries.
In that landscape, Isabelle Lewis feels perfectly at home.
Isabelle Lewis does not exist. And yet, she sounds unlike anyone else. Behind the name stand three artists: composer and producer Valgeir Sigurðsson, countertenor and director Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe, and violinist Elisabeth Klinck. Together, they construct a fictional figure that functions as an artistic compass: a shapeshifter with three sonic dimensions, suspended somewhere between melancholy, estrangement and contemporary elegance.
What began as an intuitive encounter has evolved into a striking musical universe in which theatrical vocality, sculpted electronics and fragile violin textures merge into something both intimate and monumental. Their debut album Greetings, released on the prestigious Icelandic label Bedroom Community, introduced a hybrid sonic language where pop, contemporary composition and experimental music continuously dissolve into one another.
Following an intense writing period in Rome, the trio recently returned to the legendary Greenhouse Studios in Reykjavík to develop new material. This new work expands the musical language introduced on Greetings: darker in tone, denser in texture and uncompromising in its emotional intensity.
Live, Isabelle Lewis transforms again and again. Their performances move between concert, theatre and ritual. Structures loosen, genres collapse and audiences are drawn into a charged landscape where tension, stillness and pulse coexist.
On July 14 and 15, Isabelle Lewis joins the Gent Jazz line-up alongside Ludovico Einaudi, Ballaké Sissoko and Alessandro “Asso” Stefana. Both evenings are already completely sold out.
