Spring awakens, the first rays of sunlight touch the land, and we eagerly anticipate the summer solstice and our annual sunrise concert. On Sunday, June 22, we invite you to experience the magic of dawn, a sensory encounter between music and nature in the vast meadows of Haspengouw in Tongeren Borgloon.
For this special edition, we bring together a unique Icelandic constellation with JFDR and Gyða Valtýsdóttir. A morning where time slows down, sounds weave through the landscape, and the break of day unfolds in music.
JFDR, also known as Jófríður Ákadóttir, balances between folk, pop, and electronic influences. Her voice echoes poetry and melancholy, and her sonic landscapes are steeped in natural beauty. As a cofounder of Samaris and Pascal Pinon, she became one of the key figures of the Icelandic avant garde and an inspiration for Björk. Her music has found its way into film and television, and with My Work, she was named Catch of the Day on Studio Brussel.
Gyða Valtýsdóttir is a true multi instrumentalist who first made her mark with múm, the iconic Icelandic band that pioneered new musical paths in the late 1990s. Her cello breathes, sings, and resonates in dialogue with Kronos Quartet, Damien Rice, Jónsi, Ben Frost, and Aaron and Bryce Dessner from The National.
B-Classic previously collaborated with Jófríður on The End of Infinity, while Gyða shone last year in our production alongside Kjartan Sveinsson from Sigur Rós. Now, these two extraordinary musicians come together for the first time to create something new, especially for our sunrise concert. A one time encounter, shaped in the moment, carried by the light of the morning.
In 2025, we shift our horizon and settle in the enchanting fields surrounding the Castle of Neerrepen, a hidden gem in Tongeren-Borgloon.In the first light of the summer solstice, JFDR and Gyða Valtýsdóttir merge with the awakening landscape.
Parking is available nearby. From there, we’ll guide you on foot to the place where the concert will unfold.
This concert is made possible with the financial support of the city of Tongeren-Borgloon and the Flemish Government. With heartfelt thanks to the Department of Culture of Tongeren-Borgloon for their warm logistical and organizational support.
