BEATITUDINE (IPA: /beatiˈtudine/) from the latin beatitudo refers to an ecstatic state of pleasure and wellness. Sound artist and performer Leonardo Melchionda presents a performative ceremonial of sonic vibrations, smell, ritual gestures and space exploration. A multisensory environment composed in real time, opening to a liminal experience for the entire body. Stimulating not only sound, but also tactile, visual, and olfactory perception, the performance creates an inclusive space for people with hearing disabilities, exploring what we all have in common as human bodies. Loud feedback sounds and pure sine waves generate sonic vibrations to be touched through the floor surface, visual elements such as corporeality and gestures are played by moving the sound sources and modifying the shape of the space, burning herbs and incense triggers the sense of smell, while low tones and acoustic beats facilitate the deep listening. Directing this collective immersive experience and encouraging the audience’s interaction and participation, the performer leads to rediscover a moment of “communitas”; in which similar sweeps of energy happen among all the participants and the receptivity is not only intellectual or emotional but involves bodily awareness as well. As time and space perception become irrational too, Beatitudine makes a break of everyday life and seeks the absolute catharsis towards a feeling of bliss and unconditional happiness.

Beatitudine takes place in the context of Performance Night, an evening where you can experience different theater, dance or visual arts performances in downtown Hasselt. Performance Night is an initiative of CCHA, Toneelacademie Maastricht and VONK.

! Duration:
Beatitudine is a durational performance developed in 8 movements. Every 30 minutes, at the beginning and ending of each movement, the audience is invited to both enter and leave the space. Staying longer for a few movements and attending the full performance is also highly recommended. Last entry 10:30 PM.
