Andrew Claes

Andrew Claes (1982) is an Antwerp-based saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and researcher whose work operates at the intersection of music, technology and science. As a core member of the Ghent fusion band STUFF. and former member of BRZZVLL, he has established a prominent position within the Flemish jazz and improvisation scene. In addition to the saxophone, he plays various instruments including several flutes and percussion, and is active as a music producer.

Holding a PhD in the Arts (2023) and being self-taught in electronics, programming and algorithmic composition, Claes explores the possibilities of hybrid instruments, live coding and artificial intelligence in artistic contexts. He initiated the Master programme in Live Electronics at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp, where he conducted research into training musical AI models. He is currently artist in residence at CC De Kern, where he is developing new music for his project InnerOort.

As an inventor, Claes developed the open hardware Hybrid Saxophone System, an innovative setup that transforms the saxophone into a versatile MIDI controller. His artistic practice ranges from jazz, electronics and dance music to experimental performance. He has collaborated with renowned artists and ensembles including the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, Bryggen Ensemble, Goeyvaerts String Trio and Bert Joris.

His music has been released on labels such as SDBan, De Werf, Gondwana (UK), Deep Medi (UK) and Bedrock (US). He is also working on BOTBOP, a project developed in collaboration with BOZAR and Sónar Festival (ES), exploring the creative applications of AI and algorithmic music. His recent project Plant Based Music uses real-time data sonification of plants in meditative audiovisual performances.

Together with Dago Sondervan, Claes hosts the biweekly radio show WingFi on Antwerp’s free radio station Radio Centraal, presenting an eclectic mix of live music and conversation.

Claes’ work is defined by a continuous search for new forms of artistic expression, bringing together technology and creativity in an interdisciplinary practice. His projects range from Stellar Legions, dub-inspired space jazz, to experimental free jazz in various configurations, always driven by curiosity and innovation.
