B-Classic - Romain Dayez

Romain Dayez

Romain Dayez is a Belgian baritone and multidisciplinary performer who moves freely between opera, contemporary music, Baroque repertoire, music theatre, cabaret and experimental forms. He studied voice at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris.

With around fifty operatic roles to his name, Dayez has developed a particular affinity for distinctive character roles that foreground his strong theatrical presence. He has worked with opera houses, festivals and ensembles in Belgium and abroad, performing under conductors including Hervé Niquet, Marc Minkowski and David Reiland. Contemporary creation is another important part of his practice, with some thirty world premieres featuring music by composers including Kaija Saariaho, Philippe Boesmans and Guillaume Connesson.

Dayez continuously explores the boundaries of his classical background. He has collaborated with artists from jazz, electronic music, hip hop and the visual arts, including Mélanie De Biasio, Gaël Faye, the Orchestre National de Jazz and Xavier Veilhan. Since 2012, he has been artistic director of Le Rapt Invisible, a collective that brings ancient and sacred vocal traditions into dialogue with contemporary and electronic music.

For B-Classic, Romain Dayez is one of the performers and co-creators of EAT ME, Aïda Gabriëls’ hybrid music theatre production in which music, performance, scenography and a baroque banquet spiralling out of control come together.
