B-Classic - Michiel De Naegel

Michiel De Naegel

Michiel De Naegel (Beringen, Belgium) is a composer, performer and musician whose work moves fluidly between contemporary classical music, noise rock, performance and music theatre. He graduated with a Master's degree in Composition from KASK & Conservatory Ghent in 2018. Alongside his work as a composer, he is active in the noise rock band 30,000 Monkies and the experimental project Youff, and regularly composes for theatre and film.

In 2021, De Naegel joined Studio Classic, the artistic development programme by B-Classic and Kunstplaats Vonk. It was there that he further developed the musical and performative identity of his alter ego, Joeri Chipsvingers. What began as a playful idea evolved into a fully fledged artistic universe where composition, performance, video and absurdist storytelling converge.

Joeri Chipsvingers was born during De Naegel's composition studies, inspired by a cartoon-like musical sketch that gradually transformed into an entire character. "Joeri is an absurd exaggeration of some of my own characteristics," says De Naegel. "I always want to cram everything in and I'm obsessed with frantic rhythms and crooked sounds. Apparently, I feel more comfortable making music that undermines things, in this case the seriousness with which classical music is often approached."

While De Naegel's other projects confront the outside world, Joeri Chipsvingers turns radically inward. His second album, Neem en eet hiervan (Take and Eat This), leaves behind the playful bravado of the debut and unfolds as an intimate journey through a mind haunted by intrusive voices, panic, heartbreak and self doubt. The music behaves like a nervous organism, shifting between fragile classical passages, explosive outbursts and theatrical performance.

The premiere of Neem en eet hiervan took place during Kunstennacht Hasselt 2026, where B-Classic presented the album release with the full Nemø Ensemble inside the construction site of the future Kunstenhuis Groenplein.
