On Friday night the basilic of Tongeren is the perfect setting for this unique performance: Jef Neve (left on the picture) and Lorenzo Gatto (right on the picture). Neve, Belgium’s most famous pianist and composer wrote a new piece for the occasion. They will be supported on stage by the Young Belgian Strings.
When Jef Neve heard that he had the opportunity to collaborate with Lorenzo Gatto for this year’s festival, he couldn’t be happier. And when a composer as talented as Neve is happy, he translates his joy in music. So, he rolled up his sleeves and started writing a new piece with Gatto in mind. That’s what they call ‘une création mondiale’, or in English: a world premiere.
But first on the schedule tonight: The String Quartet Opus 95 by Beethoven in a version for string orchestra. Young Belgian Strings (who have Lorenzo Gatto as a mentor/godfather) will play this for us, without conductor but directed by Quatuor Danel. This is truly unique: every instrument and every musician of YBS is directed by a corresponding instrument in the quartet.
In between Ekaterina Levental and Frank Peters perform songs by the Russian Nikolaj Medtner. The juicy festival story behind this … well, they will tell you themselves.
An exceptional evening, that’s for sure. Is that a treble clef in our pants or are we already excited to see these performances?
